Gruhapravesam is a morning function with a fixed muhurtham, a homam, and a meal for family and neighbours. It is short, it is early, and almost everything that goes wrong is logistics rather than ritual.
What the morning needs
- Homam setup — a ventilated spot, because a homam in a sealed new flat fills it with smoke and sets off alarms. Balcony or portico, with the purohit consulted first.
- Entrance — mango toranam, rangoli, banana stems either side of the door, and flowers. This is the photograph that gets sent to everyone who could not come.
- Puja area — kalasham, the samagri laid out, seating for the couple and the purohit at floor level.
- Milk boiling — the kitchen needs to be usable and the gas connected. Confirm this a week ahead, not the night before.

The apartment problem
Most Vijayawada gruhapravesams now happen in apartments, and most apartment associations have rules nobody reads until the morning:
- Lift use for furniture and equipment, often restricted to certain hours
- No cooking in common areas, including the corridor outside your own door
- LPG cylinders not permitted above certain floors
