A gruhapravesam is a long day with a short ceremony at its heart — and most of the stress comes from the parts around it: the puja items nobody bought, the breakfast that arrived during the homam, guests who came at the wrong time. This checklist covers all of it, in order.
Two to three weeks before
- Muhurtham: fix it with your pandit; confirm the date works for the builder handover and registration.
- Pandit: confirm arrival time and whether one or two priests are needed for the homam.
- Puja items list: get the pandit’s written list — typically kalasam, coconuts, betel, turmeric, kumkum, flowers, fruits, ghee, samidha for the homam, navadhanyam, and the items for the Vastu puja. Assign one person to buy it all.
- Guest list and timing: family for the muhurtham, wider circle in the afternoon or evening.
- Food: book satvik catering — breakfast after the homam, lunch for family, snacks for evening guests. See gruhapravesam catering.
- Decor: entrance toran, mango leaves, banana stems, rangoli, marigold. Book a decorator or assign it to family.
The day before
- Deep-clean the house; keep the puja area clear.
- Decor set up in the evening — entrance, puja space, a small stage if the crowd is large.
- Boil the milk vessel ready; keep the kalasam items in one tray.
- Confirm caterer’s arrival time and where they will serve — usually the terrace, parking or clubhouse.
Muhurtham morning
- Rangoli and lamps at the entrance before the pandit arrives.
- The couple enters with the kalasam at the muhurtham, right foot first.
- Ganapathi puja, Vastu puja, homam — usually 1.5 to 2.5 hours.
- Milk boiled over in the kitchen; first cooking done.
- Satvik breakfast served after the homam — pongal, upma, idli, kesari, coffee.
Afternoon and evening
- Traditional lunch for family and close relatives.
- Snacks, sweets and drinks for visiting guests through the afternoon.
- Sweet boxes at the door for guests leaving.
