“Candid” has become a word that means nothing, because every photographer now uses it. Here is what it should actually mean, and what to check.

What candid actually is

Candid is a second photographer whose job is to not direct anyone — working the edges of the room, watching for the moment rather than arranging it. It cannot be done by the same person shooting the traditional coverage, because that person is busy posing a group. If a studio offers candid with one photographer, they are offering traditional coverage with a longer lens.

So the real question is crew size per function, not the word on the package.

Crew, function by function

• Haldi and mehendi — one candid photographer is usually enough; it is a small room and two people get in each other’s frames.
• Muhurtham — traditional plus candid, minimum. The ritual sequence cannot be repeated, and someone has to be locked on it while the other works the family.
• Reception — traditional, candid, and video. The greeting line runs continuously and misses nothing well.
• Video — a separate operator. A photographer switching to video misses both.

The family photo block

The single biggest cause of wedding-day delay, every time. What fixes it: a fixed 30–45 minute slot in the schedule, announced to both families in advance, and a written list of the groupings in order. Without the list, each group has to be assembled by shouting, and the block doubles.

Settle these before the day

1. The lead photographer named, and whether they personally are shooting your wedding
2. Crew size per function, written down
3. Deliverable counts and film runtimes as numbers, not “all the good ones”
4. Delivery date — four to eight weeks is normal; anything vaguer will be late
5. Raw file policy, agreed in advance
6. Whether drone is permitted at your venue — some Vijayawada venues and all temple precincts restrict it
7. Backup — dual card slots and where the files sleep that night
