Seemantham and Baby Shower at Home in Hyderabad: Rituals, Decor, Food and Costs

Seemantham (or simantham, valakappu in some families) is usually held in the seventh or eighth month, and is one of the warmest functions in a Telugu household — small guest list, close family, and a lot of attention on the mother-to-be. It is also easy to over-plan into something exhausting for the person it is for.

Ritual order, in outline

Customs vary by family and region, so take your elders’ version over any list online. The common shape is: a small puja, the bangle ceremony where the mother-to-be is given glass bangles by married women, application of turmeric and kumkum, aarti, gifting of a new saree and flowers, blessings from elders, then the meal. Some families include a favourite-foods ritual where the mother-to-be is offered dishes she has been craving.

Confirm with the family purohit: the muhurtham timing, what puja items to arrange, and whether the ceremony is held in the morning or afternoon.

Home or function hall?

At home works up to roughly 40-50 guests. It is more comfortable for the mother-to-be, costs far less, and feels the way this function is supposed to feel. Practical limits are seating, parking and how many people the kitchen area can support.

A small hall or clubhouse makes sense past 60 guests, or if the flat cannot take the numbers. Many apartment community halls in LB Nagar, Nagole and Vanasthalipuram rent for ₹5,000-20,000 for a half day, which is often the sensible middle option.

Decor that photographs well without taking over the room

  • Floral swing (oonjal) or a decorated chair — the centrepiece, and where most photos happen. ₹8,000-30,000 depending on flowers.
  • Backdrop — marigold and mango leaf toranam for a traditional look, or pastel drapes with fairy lights for a softer one. ₹5,000-20,000.
  • Bangle display — glass bangles arranged on a decorated tray or stand; simple and very photogenic.
  • Rangoli and diyas at the entrance.
  • Balloon arch if there is a baby-shower element alongside the traditional ceremony. See balloon decoration.

Keep a clear, comfortable seat with back support for the mother-to-be, and keep the space cool. A decorated swing she cannot sit in for two hours is a decor choice that failed.

Food

Traditionally a satvik vegetarian meal, often on a banana leaf, served after the ceremony. A typical spread: pappu, one dry curry, one gravy, pulusu, sambar, rasam, curd, pickle, appadam, payasam, plain rice and one variety rice — plus the dishes the mother-to-be has been craving, which is half the point of the day.

Cost: ₹250-400 per plate for a traditional meal at home. For 50 guests, ₹12,500-20,000. See seemantham and baby shower catering and home catering.

Realistic cost breakdown — 50 guests at home

  • Catering (50 x ₹300) — ₹15,000
  • Decor (swing, backdrop, flowers) — ₹15,000-30,000
  • Purohit and puja items — ₹3,000-7,000
  • Photography, 3 hours — ₹15,000-25,000
  • Return gifts (bangles, sweets boxes) — ₹100-300 per guest
  • Saree, flowers and jewellery for the mother-to-be — family’s own budget

Typical total: ₹55,000-90,000 at home for 50 guests. A hall adds ₹5,000-20,000 plus higher decor.

A short timeline

  • 4 weeks out — fix date with the purohit, decide home or hall, draw up the guest list
  • 3 weeks — book catering and decor, order the saree
  • 2 weeks — book photography, order return gifts, share invites
  • 1 week — confirm headcount, buy puja items, order bangles
  • Day before — decor setup access, confirm timings with everyone

The things people forget

  1. Seating with back support, and a quiet room to rest in
  2. Air cooling — Hyderabad afternoons plus a crowded flat plus a saree is a lot
  3. Someone assigned to manage the schedule so she does not have to
  4. A group photo slot before elderly relatives leave
  5. Food the mother-to-be actually wants, not only the ritual menu
