Non-Plastic Catering in Hyderabad: What It Costs and What Actually Works

Every caterer in Hyderabad will say yes to plastic-free. Far fewer will tell you what it adds per plate, or which material falls apart under sambar. Here are the numbers and the honest limits.

The short answer on cost

Less than most people assume. On a ₹600 per-plate menu, going fully plastic-free is usually a 3–6% increase. For 300 guests that is roughly ₹6,000 to ₹13,000 on top — and a chunk of it comes straight back when 300 water bottles disappear from the quote.

Material by material

Banana leaf — ₹0 extra

For a seated meal it is the best option available and it costs nothing. It composts in days and the food looks right on it. It does not work standing up, which rules it out for most receptions.

Areca leaf — adds ₹12–25 per plate

Pressed from fallen areca palm sheaths. Rigid enough to hold one-handed, takes hot oily food and gravy without softening — the thing paper plates cannot do. This is the workhorse for standing buffets. Composts in 60–90 days.

Bagasse — adds ₹10–22 per plate

Sugarcane pulp. Closest in feel to plastic, handles hot liquid, available as boxes with lids — which makes it the practical choice for packed meals and office catering.

Steel — adds ₹25–45 per head

Zero waste and it feels like a real meal. The cost is not the steel, it is transport both ways, washing and the count at the end. Practical for home functions, pujas and anywhere near the caterer’s base.

Water service — usually saves money

Bottled water is the single largest plastic line at most Hyderabad functions. Steel or glass dispensers with tumblers typically cost less than the bottles they replace.

Where plastic-free genuinely fails

  • No wash-up access at the venue — steel stops being an option. Use areca and bagasse.
  • Sealed takeaway at scale — compostable sealing film is still unreliable above a few hundred boxes. Expect the lid or seal to be the one plastic item left.
  • Long outdoor summer functions — areca copes, but cloth and steel logistics get hard without shade and a service area.
  • Hotels with their own crockery rules — the decision is not yours or the caterer’s.

A caterer who says none of these apply has not run it.

The kitchen half nobody mentions

Plates are the visible part. Cling film over every tray, plastic transport crates and bottled water in the kitchen are the invisible part, and together they often outweigh the service items. Ask how food is transported and covered, not just what it is served on.

Why it is becoming a requirement, not a preference

Telangana restricts a range of single-use plastic items, and function halls, gated communities, schools and corporate campuses across Hyderabad increasingly ask for plastic-free service in writing — sometimes as a booking condition. Corporate clients often need a line on the invoice confirming it for sustainability reporting.

Five things to put in the quote

  1. The material for every item — plates, bowls, cutlery, cups, napkins, water
  2. What the per-plate addition is, as a number, not “nominal”
  3. How food is transported and covered
  4. Whether waste is segregated at the end, and by whom
  5. Written confirmation on the invoice if you need it for records
