Telugu & Telangana Wedding Food Menu List: 5 Complete Menus with Item Counts

Families usually arrive at a menu discussion with a list of favourite dishes. What actually decides whether the food works is the shape of the menu — how many items, in what order, and which of them a kitchen can hold hot for ninety minutes. Below are five complete Telugu and Telangana wedding menus written the way caterers in Hyderabad actually build them.

1. Muhurtham lunch — traditional Telugu, banana leaf

Seated service, pure vegetarian, no onion-garlic if the family keeps it satvik for the ceremony.

  • Welcome: panakam or majjiga (buttermilk)
  • Podis: kandi podi, kura podi, with ghee
  • Pacchadi: gongura or dosakaya
  • Curries: one dry (vepudu) + one gravy (koora)
  • Pappu: tomato or palakura pappu
  • Liquids: pulusu, sambar, rasam
  • Sides: curd, pickle (avakaya), appadam, vadiyalu
  • Rice: plain rice + one variety rice (pulihora)
  • Sweets: one payasam (semiya or paramannam) + one sweet (bobbatlu, ariselu or laddu)

Item count: 15–17. Band: ₹280–380 per plate. This is the menu most often ruined by adding paneer and noodles to it — before noon, almost nobody eats them. See Telugu wedding catering.

2. Reception dinner — Telangana non-veg

  • Welcome: mocktail or jaljeera
  • Starters: two veg (paneer tikka, mirchi bajji) + two non-veg (chicken 65, apollo fish), tray-served
  • Main: chicken or mutton dum biryani
  • With it: mirchi ka salan, dahi ki chutney, raita
  • Veg mains: one paneer gravy + one seasonal koora
  • Dal: dal tadka or pappu
  • Breads: tandoori roti or naan from a live counter
  • Salads: two, plus onion-lemon
  • Sweets: double ka meetha + qubani ka meetha, ice cream

Item count: 17–19. Band: ₹550–700. Biryani quantity is the thing to pin down — the numbers are in our biryani quantity guide.

3. Pure-veg reception — multi-cuisine

Welcome drink, three starters, one live chaat counter, paneer main, one seasonal vegetable, dal makhani, veg biryani or pulao, jeera rice, three breads, raita, two salads, two desserts plus ice cream.

Item count: 18–20. Band: ₹500–650. See veg catering and, for Jain or satvik lines, how pure-veg and Jain catering is kept separate.

4. Haldi and sangeet — lighter, snackier

Haldi is usually morning and short; sangeet is late and people eat while standing.

  • Haldi (morning): idli, two dosas from a live counter, upma or pongal, two chutneys, sambar, one sweet, filter coffee and tea — 9–11 items, ₹150–250
  • Sangeet (night): mocktail bar, four tray-passed starters, one chaat counter, one Chinese counter, biryani or pulao, two gravies, breads, dessert table — 16–18 items, ₹500–650

See haldi, mehendi and sangeet catering.

5. Nischitartham (engagement) lunch

Smaller guest list, usually 80–200, and the menu sits between the muhurtham meal and a reception: welcome drink, two starters, pulihora, one paneer or non-veg main, two curries, pappu, pulusu, rasam, curd, pickle, appadam, one payasam, one sweet.

Item count: 15–17. Band: ₹380–550. See engagement catering.

How many items do you actually need?

Past roughly 20 items, guests eat the same eight things and the rest is waste you paid for. The useful rule for a Hyderabad reception: two starters circulating at any time per hundred guests, one rice main done extremely well, two gravies, one dal, breads from a live counter, two desserts. Spend what you save on service staff and hot-holding instead — that is what guests remember.

Five things to write into the quote

  1. Every dish by name, not “2 starters, 3 mains”
  2. Which items are live-counter and which are pre-cooked
  3. Service staff per hundred guests (buffet needs 4–5, plated 8–10)
  4. Replenishment plan for the first thirty minutes, when most people eat
  5. Whether GST, transport and extra hours sit inside or outside the per-plate rate

Price bands by cuisine and service style are in what ₹300, ₹500 and ₹800 per plate gets you, and sample menus by event type in wedding catering menu ideas.
