Non-Plastic Catering in Hyderabad
Non-plastic catering in Hyderabad — areca leaf, banana leaf, steel and bagasse service with real per-plate costs and what each material can and cannot do.
Non-Plastic Catering in Hyderabad
Most catering quotes in Hyderabad assume disposable plastic without saying so — plastic plates, thermocol bowls, plastic spoons, cling film over every tray, and a few hundred water bottles. For a 300-guest function that is roughly 1,500 single-use plastic items that exist for ninety minutes and then become somebody else’s problem.
We run non-plastic catering as a standard option, not a premium add-on: areca leaf, banana leaf, steel, glass, ceramic and bagasse, depending on the function. This page explains what each material actually does, what it costs per plate, and where it genuinely does not work — because an eco option that fails halfway through dinner is worse than no eco option at all.
What we use, and what each one is good at
Banana leaf
The traditional Telugu answer, and still the best one for a seated muhurtham meal. Costs almost nothing, composts in days, and the food looks right on it. Limits: it is for seated service, not a standing buffet, and it needs a flat surface — you cannot hold a banana leaf and a glass while standing.
Areca (palm) leaf plates
Pressed from fallen areca palm sheaths, so no tree is cut. Rigid enough to hold with one hand, takes hot and oily food without leaking, and handles gravy and sambar — which paper plates do not. This is our default for standing receptions and buffets. Compostable in 60 to 90 days. Available as plates, square trays, compartment plates and bowls.
Steel
Zero waste, and it feels like a proper meal rather than a disposable one. Used for home functions, pujas, smaller gatherings and anywhere a wash-up point exists. Limits: it needs transport both ways, a washing arrangement and a count at the end, which is why it is priced differently.
Glass and ceramic
For welcome drinks, dessert cups, high tea and corporate events where the room is small enough to manage them. Same logistics as steel.
Bagasse (sugarcane pulp)
Made from sugarcane fibre left after juice extraction. Closest in feel to a plastic plate, takes hot liquids, and is compostable. We use it for meal boxes, packed lunches and conference catering where sealed lids matter.
Wooden and bamboo cutlery, paper straws, cloth napkins
Birchwood spoons and forks, bamboo skewers for starters, cloth napkins instead of tissue where the function allows, and steel or glass water service instead of bottles.
What it costs
| Banana leaf (seated meal) | no extra cost — included |
|---|---|
| Areca leaf plates & bowls | adds ₹12–25 per plate |
| Bagasse plates / meal boxes | adds ₹10–22 per plate |
| Wooden cutlery | adds ₹3–7 per head |
| Steel crockery & cutlery | adds ₹25–45 per head (transport + washing) |
| Glass tumblers, water service | adds ₹8–18 per head, replaces bottled water |
| Cloth napkins | adds ₹5–12 per head |
| Fully plastic-free, 300 guests | typically ₹6,000–13,000 over a standard quote |
Indicative ranges for Hyderabad, not a fixed price list. On a ₹600 per-plate menu, going fully plastic-free is usually a 3–6% increase — less than most people assume, and often offset by dropping 300 water bottles.
Where non-plastic genuinely does not work
We would rather tell you this now than on the day:
- Very long outdoor functions in peak summer — areca holds up, but cloth and steel logistics get difficult without a shaded service area.
- Venues with no wash-up access — steel needs water and space. Without them we use areca and bagasse instead.
- Takeaway for 500+ with sealed lids — bagasse boxes work, but fully compostable sealing film is not reliable at that scale yet, so we are honest that the lid may not be plastic-free.
- Some hotel venues insist on their own crockery and their own kitchen, which takes the decision away from both of us.
Why this is worth doing in Hyderabad specifically
Telangana has restricted single-use plastic items, and many function halls, apartment associations, gated communities, schools and corporate campuses now ask for plastic-free service in writing — some as a condition of booking. Corporate clients increasingly need it for their own sustainability reporting, and will ask for a note on the invoice confirming it.
Beyond compliance: a banana-leaf meal or an areca plate photographs better than a white plastic plate, and guests notice. It is one of the few decisions that is cheaper than people expect, looks better, and is easier to defend.
How we run a plastic-free function
- We ask what the venue allows — wash-up access, storage, bin arrangements and whether the hall has its own crockery rule.
- We match material to service style — banana leaf for seated, areca for standing, steel where washing is possible, bagasse for boxes.
- Water is planned first, because bottles are the single biggest plastic line at most functions. Steel or glass dispensers with tumblers replace them.
- Kitchen side too — cling film and plastic transport crates are the hidden half of it. We use covered steel containers for transport wherever the route allows.
- Segregation at the end — leaf and bagasse waste separated from the rest so it can actually compost instead of going to landfill mixed.
- Written confirmation on the quote and the invoice, which is what corporate and institutional clients need for their records.
Common questions
Is non-plastic catering more expensive in Hyderabad?
Less than people expect. Banana leaf costs nothing extra. Areca leaf adds ₹12–25 per plate. A fully plastic-free setup for 300 guests is typically ₹6,000–13,000 above a standard quote — around 3–6% on a mid-range menu, and part of that is recovered by dropping bottled water.
Will areca leaf plates leak with sambar or gravy?
No. Areca is pressed palm sheath, not paper, and holds hot liquid and oil without softening. That is exactly why we use it for buffets rather than paper plates.
Can you do a fully plastic-free wedding?
Yes, for the food service side — plates, cutlery, water, napkins and most transport. We will tell you honestly which items we cannot guarantee, usually sealing film on takeaway boxes.
Do you provide written confirmation for corporate compliance?
Yes. A line on the quote and the GST invoice stating the service was plastic-free, with the materials listed, for your sustainability or CSR records.
Ask for it by name. Tell us “non-plastic” when you enquire and the quote comes back that way from the start, with the material for each item written in. Call +91 97036 16476 or send an enquiry.
