Dessert is the last thing guests taste and the first thing they describe afterwards, and it is also the course most often ordered as an afterthought. Two sweets dropped at the end of a buffet line is not a dessert plan. Here is what works at Hyderabad events, how much to order, and what each option costs.
How much dessert per person
The working figure is 80–120g of dessert per adult across all sweet items when dessert follows a full meal. Practically:
- Two sweets + ice cream — the standard reception plan, roughly 2 portions per head ordered for 1.3 eaten
- Dessert table of 5–6 items — order 2.5 portions per head; people take small amounts of many things
- Live counter only (jalebi, gulab jamun) — 1.5 portions per head, because it is served warm and to order
Over-ordering dessert is the most common waste line in a catering quote. Ask for the per-head figure rather than “enough for everyone”.
Traditional Telugu and Hyderabadi sweets
- Double ka meetha — the Hyderabadi reception default, holds well in a chafing dish
- Qubani ka meetha — apricot, served with cream or ice cream; pairs with biryani menus
- Bobbatlu / puran poli — made fresh, best from a live tawa
- Ariselu — festival and muhurtham menus
- Payasam — semiya, paramannam or pala talikalu; essential on a banana-leaf meal
- Laddu, mysore pak, kaju katli — travel well, good for boxes and return gifts
- Jangiri and jalebi — best warm from a counter, poor after an hour

Live dessert counters
A live counter buys you warmth, theatre and a shorter queue at the main buffet. Each typically adds ₹60–150 per head:
- Jalebi with rabri — fried to order; the most popular and the messiest to site
- Gulab jamun in warm syrup — simple, reliable, always finishes
- Ice cream counter with 4–6 flavours and toppings; needs reliable power
- Kulfi cart — matka kulfi, falooda; strong for outdoor and summer events
- Pan counter — not dessert exactly, but it is how a Hyderabad dinner ends. ₹40–90 per head
- Chocolate fountain — photographs well, eaten less than people expect; best at children’s parties
- Waffle or pancake station — strong at sangeet and corporate evenings
Platters — when you want dessert as a gift, not a course
Sweet platters and boxes work for muhurtham tambulam, corporate gifting, return gifts and home functions where there is no buffet at all.
- Mixed sweet box, 250g — ₹180–350 depending on contents (kaju items push it up)
- 500g assorted box — ₹350–700
- Dry fruit and sweet combination platter — ₹500–1,200, the usual corporate Diwali format
- Dessert platter for a table of 8–10 — ₹900–2,000, for home functions and small gatherings
- Single-serve cups (payasam, mousse, phirni) — ₹60–140 each; the cleanest option for standing events
For boxed and portioned formats see packed meal box catering.
Dessert table layout
Place it at the far end of the buffet flow, not beside the starters. People who reach dessert are finishing, and you want them moving away from the queue rather than back into it. Light it — a dessert table in a dim corner does not get eaten or photographed. Keep warm items (jalebi, jamun) and frozen items (ice cream, kulfi) at opposite ends, with at least a metre between them.
Dietary lines people forget
- Eggless — ask explicitly; many cakes, mousses and some ice creams are not
- Jain — no honey, and watch for potato or root-derived ingredients. See pure veg and Jain catering
- Sugar-free — one option on any guest list with elders is simple courtesy
- Nut allergies — label the kaju and badam items at the counter
What to confirm in the quote
- Portions per head for each dessert item, as a number
- Which items are live-counter and which arrive pre-made
- Power requirement for ice cream, kulfi or waffle counters
- Whether eggless and sugar-free options are labelled at the counter
- Service staff at the dessert station — unmanned dessert tables run out invisibly
